In the majority of cases on careful investigation it will be found to be the latter. As the existence of a scorbutic taint is so frequently diagnosed by a cursory glance at the condition of the gums only, and no further enquiries made to corroborate this conclusion, I feel certain that scurvy has been too often blackened by having foisted on to it what is merely a local disease of the gums. IIow often it is our experience that bodies of men are inspected for scurvy, and each man put down as a victim of the disease whose gums appear unhealthy, and especially if on pressure slight haemorrhage can be produced ;
